The Happy Mondays are to reform in May this year for a month-long tour, singer Rowetta Satchell has confirmed.

Former X Factor finalist Satchell told BBC Radio Manchester that the group had been in talks for a long time but finally made the decision last week.

It will be the first time the Step On group has played together since 1992, with the idea reputedly coming from Shaun Ryder and his manager.

Satchell said that all seven members of the original line-up met last week to "see if they could sit in a room together," referring to the band's acrimonious past, adding that they decided it could only happen with the full line-up.

The band were at the forefront of the Madchester scene in the late '80s and early '90s. Discovered by impresario Tony Wilson, they released the albums Squirrel And G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), Bummed, and Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches.

They are not the only Manchester band to announce a reunion recently, with The Stone Roses playing a number of shows this summer.
