Revellers at this year's T in the Park festival are being encouraged to sign up to Christian Aid's Cut the Carbon campaign.

In a similar vein to the I Count movement at Glastonbury, Christian Aid hopes to secure as many of the 80,000 possible signatures as it can to petition the government for action on climate change.

Katie Leung, who stars in the forthcoming Harry Potter film, will be appearing on stage to spell out the Christian Aid message as well as taking part in Edinburgh's Cut the Carbon march on July 21st.

She said: "I am really looking forward to going to T in the Park. Not just because the Arctic Monkeys and the Killers are playing, but because it gives me a chance to tell people about the Cut the Carbon rally organised by Christian Aid and Stop Climate Chaos.

"The rally is doing something really important - highlighting what climate change is doing to the world's poorest countries - and there are some great acts playing, too."

Geoff Ellis, head of Big Day Out which promotes T in the Park, said he was "delighted" to be supporting Christian Aid.

"The rally in Edinburgh will help to highlight the worrying global impact of climate change, but will also encourage everyone who attends to get involved by reducing their own carbon emissions," he added.

T in the Park gets underway today and will last over the weekend at Balado in Kinross-shire.

As well as Arctic Monkeys and the Killers, among this year's comprehensive line-up are Bloc Party, the Coral, Lily Allen and Razorlight.

In addition the Kooks, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Kasabian, Editors, Babyshambles and the View are scheduled to play.
