Sir Elton John has accepted £100,000 in libel damages at the high court over comments published about him by the Daily Mail last June.
The paper alleged that the flamboyant star had issued a "bizarre and absurd edict" to guests at his annual White Tie and Tiara fundraising ball, instructing them not to approach him.
Lawyers for Sir Elton argued that the publications implied he was "self-important, arrogant and rude" and that the star was concerned that such an "old-fashioned royalty or some tinpot dictator" perception would have a negative effect on the perception of the Elton John Aids Foundations.
The singer's solicitor, Nigel Tait, continued: "In fact, not only was no such edict issued at all, Sir Elton greets each guest as they arrive and is well-known for chatting to as many people as possible who attend the ball, not least to thank them for helping him with his fundraising efforts."
The newspaper published an apology over the affair after Sir Elton's lawyers complained.
Founded in 1992 and 1993, the two branches of the foundation, one UK-based and one in the States, have raised more than £50 million to help some 12 million people affected by Aids worldwide.
The ball has been held annually for the past seven years at the Windsor home of Sir Elton and partner David Furnish, with the glamorous party attracting numerous celebrities and their chequebooks to raise funds for the charity.
Just some of the rich and famous in attendance at last year's event included Elizabeth Hurley, Bob Geldof, Diana Ross and Kate Moss.
The 59-year-old music legend was said to be "happy with the settlement" from Associated Newspapers, which will be donated to the foundation.
