Doherty arrested on drugs charge
Rock singer Pete Doherty has been arrested for suspected drug possession just hours after a judge spared him a prison term and ordered him to undergo rehabilitation for previous drugs offences.

At Thames magistrates court in east London yesterday, district judge Jane McIvor gave Doherty two years' probation, a six months driving ban and ordered him to take an 18-month drugs rehabilitation programme.

"It is going to be a long and slow process but you are showing significant signs of compliance and effort," the judge said.

The on-off boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss was arrested at 14:10 BST yesterday afternoon, just three hours after he left the court.

Police said they arrested the 27-year-old and another man, 21, after stopping a car in east London on a routine patrol.

The lead singer of the Babyshambles was arrested on suspicion of possessing class A drugs with the intent to supply.

Police caught Doherty in December and January with "a small white rock in his right sock".

He was subsequently tested for drugs and proved positive for both cocaine and opiates.track End of story
