Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has performed an emotional tribute to the band's late keyboardist Richard Wright.

Appearing on BBC2's Later… with Jools Holland, Gilmour sang the 1968 song Remember the Day, written by Wright, who died aged 65 last week after battling cancer.

"He created a sound that glued the whole Pink Floyd thing together," Gilmour told Holland on the music show.

"He was just a very self-effacing but very talented, lovely chap. We're incredibly sad to have lost him."

Wright, who appeared on every Pink Floyd tour and is only absent from one album, 1983's The Final Cut, had been scheduled to accompany Gilmour on Later… but had sent the guitarist a text message three weeks ago confirming he would be unable to attend.

Gilmour said the keyboardist had brought "a slightly more jazzy and ethereal element" to the Pink Floyd sound.

"He had some elusive quality, let's call it soul, that glued the whole thing together. You notice it when it's missing."

Wright met fellow band members Roger Waters and Nick Mason at the Regent Street Polytechnic College of Architecture and was part of the Pink Floyd Sound - as they were originally called - as well as the band's previous incarnations Sigma 6 and the Screaming Abdabs.

Gilmour's performance can be seen alongside songs from Katy Perry, Roots Manuva and Mercury winners Elbow on Friday September 26th on BBC2 at 23:35 BST.
