Coldplay are up for the artist of the year prize at the 2008 American Music awards (AMAs), it has been announced.

The quartet are also included in the favourite album, favourite alternative rock and favourite band categories.

However, Alicia Keys leads the field, with five nominations, including favourite female artist in both the pop/rock and soul/R 'n' B categories.

US talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel announced the nominations at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Tuesday, with Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Rihanna, Usher and Kanye West all up for a brace of awards.

Box office smash Mamma Mia! is nominated for the best soundtrack prize along with Juno and Alvin and the Chipmunks.

After a public vote at amavote.com, the 36th annual AMAs will be held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on November 23rd.
