Oasis are to receive the outstanding contribution to music award at next year's Brit awards, the music industry's trade association, BPI, announced today.
After forming in Manchester in 1991, the band have gone on to become one of the most popular British acts ever.
And last year the Guinness Book of World Records declared Oasis to be the most successful act of the last decade, having sold more than 50 million records worldwide.
Announcing the award, BPI chairman Peter Jamieson said: "Oasis set the standard for many of the young rock bands who are currently enjoying success in the UK charts.
"As the Brit Awards goes live for the first time in nearly two decades, it is appropriate that we should honour one of the most exciting live acts the UK has produced."
They will be handed the prize in February next year at the Brits award ceremony, at which they will also perform live.
It is not the first time that Oasis have been honoured at the Brits; in the past ten years they have picked up awards for best British breakthrough act, best British album, best British group and best British video for Wonderwall.
They are in prestigious company in winning the outstanding achievement award; previous winners include The Beatles, U2, Paul Weller, Tom Jones, Sting and David Bowie.
