Former N Sync member Lance Bass has claimed that troubled pop princess Britney Spears has distanced herself from her old friends.

In an interview for the current issue of GQ magazine, the former boy band singer said he had tried to help the Baby One More Time star in the past but claimed that his attempts had been rebuffed.

Asked if he had been in touch with Spears, Bass said: "I tried. I tried. She's my neighbour in Beverly Hills. She lives next door. I tried to get in touch with her – I wanted to be that friend to help her. I don't think she's having any of her old friends anymore."

He also revealed that he had confided in the singer about his sexuality, in order to help her through troubled times following her brief marriage to a childhood friend in Las Vegas.

"I felt bad for her," Bass says. "I knew she was about to go through a lot of crap. I felt the need to share something. So I sat her on my bed, and I'm like, 'Well, I'm gay!'"

He told the magazine that Spears was surprised by his announcement as he had always been "the Southern gentleman".

In the interview, Bass also speaks about how he hoped N Sync would get back together

Spears, who recently released the video for her new single Gimme More, is currently involved in two court cases.

She is fighting to regain custody of her children from ex-husband Kevin Federline and was recently fingerprinted and booked for a parking offence that could see her sentenced to time in jail.
