While the film world is looking to London and this year's Bafta awards, the music world's attention is firmly fixed on Los Angeles and this year's Grammy awards, the 49th in the event's history.

This year's ceremony, which begins at 20:00 local time (04:00 GMT tomorrow) this evening, features a majority of British artists in the best newcomer category for the first time in more than two decades.

James Blunt, Corinne Bailey Rae and Imogen Heap are the great British hopes but face strong competition from Chris Brown and Carrie Underwood.

Blunt's You're Beautiful is pushing for the record of the year title, as is Rae's Put Your Records On. The Dixie Chicks, Mary J Blige and Gnarls Barkley make up the nominees in this headline category.

In the long-playing stakes US artists dominate. Up for album of the year this year are the Dixie Chicks' Taking The Long Way, Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds and John Mayer's Continuum.

Gnarls Barkley looks to success with St Elsewhere while the Red Hot Chili Peppers' double-album Stadium Arcadium makes up the nominees in this category.

Blunt is set to perform at the awards ceremony, alongside Mary J Blige, Ludacris and r'n'b legends Earth, Wind & Fire.
