He may continue to divide opinion on both sides of the Atlantic, but singer James Blunt can take comfort in the fact this his dulcet tones are requested at more funerals than those of any other artist.
Goodbye My Lover was found to be the most played song at funerals in Britain, narrowly pushing Robbie Williams' Angels into second place.
The Bereavement Register's survey of 5,000 people revealed that the top 20 most requested songs are a mix of the old and new, with S Club 7's Reach for the Stars and Aerosmith's I Don't Want to Miss a Thing rubbing shoulders with What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong and the Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody.
More than half of funerals are concluded with a song, today's research says, while 79 per cent of people discuss what they would like their swansong to be with friends and family.
Mark Roy, founder of the Bereavement Register, said: "The top 20 really shows how far we have come in terms of saying good-bye. Gone are the dirges of yore, instead we are seeing contemporary music that is easier to relate to.
"Everyone has a favourite song that means something very special to them, often connected to a particular time and place. When the song is played this can be a very emotive reminder of that person and a reassurance in our time of grief.
