Tony Iommi, guitarist with heavy metal band Black Sabbath, is to undergo treatment for cancer.

The 63-year-old, one of the founding members of the Birmingham band, has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma.

A statement on his website from his fellow band members, which includes Ozzy Osborne, urged fans to send Iommi "positive vibes". The band also confirmed that they would move from Los Angeles to London to work with the guitarist while he undergoes treatment.

"The Iron Man of Rock and Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full recovery," Black Sabbath said.

In November last year, the band announced that they would reform with the original line-up for a world tour. They have also been working with Rick Rubin on their first new album in 33 years, due for release in autumn.

It was recently confirmed that they would play Download Festival at Donington Park later this year.
