Sheffield indie band Arctic Monkeys are the frontrunners for this year's NME awards, with six nominations.

Kasabian follow closely behind on five, it was revealed on Monday, with the bands going head to head in th best British band, best live band, best album and best video catgeories, as well as the 'Giving It Back' section for generosity to their fanbase.

Arctic Monkeys are also up against Jamie T, the Big Pink, Animal Collective and Florence and the Machine for the best track prize.

"It's a good thing knowing we're still up for these awards," said Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner.

"Kasabian have said that there aren't any other proper rock bands apart from us and them. I don't necessarily agree completely but I know what they're saying. I think we're just co-existing nicely."

Both bands are joined in the best band category by four-times nominated Muse, Biffy Clyro and Oasis, who are shortlisted for three prizes despite splitting last year.

As well as the appreciative awards, the NME shortlist includes a number of critical prizes, with Noel and Liam Gallagher both up for the Villain of the Year prize and Green Day nominated for both worst band and worst album.

"The NME awards is the one ceremony where you see the bands who have really meant something and made a difference get justly rewarded," said the magazine's editor Krissi Murison.

The awards will be presented at London's Brixton Academy on February 24th.
