Singer Eddy Grant is considering a lawsuit against pop act Gorillaz, claiming the Dare band have "stolen" from one of his tracks for the composition of their current single.
The Electric Avenue star believes Gorillaz' new song Stylo is similar to his 1977 song Time Warp and is consulting lawyers.
"I am outraged that the Gorillaz have infringed the copyright of my song Time Warp, claiming their song Stylo to be an original composition," he commented.
EMI Publishing, which represents both acts, said it was "a private matter between Eddy Grant and Gorillaz" and added the label did not intend to make further comment.
As he shares a label with EMI, Grant has complained that he was not consulted over the composition of Stylo, which features on Gorillaz' number two album Plastic Beach.
"In a properly configured relationship I would have gotten a call from EMI to say, 'Damon wants to use Time Warp. What arrangement can you guys come to? Would you claim 100 per cent, would you claim 60 per cent, or 70 per cent of whatever it is?'," he told NME.com.
"That phone call never came. Instead what happened is somebody went straight to a musicologist, implying that there was some kind of pre-knowledge of some kind of infringement."
He added: "[Gorillaz'] Damon Albarn knows in his heart of hearts - it's unfortunate that we cant get into people's hearts - he knows that [Time Warp] is a song that he's loved, in his club days. I don't know the guy. but he knows this is a song he loves."
