Greg Ash finds the dance duo are the perfect closing act for a perfect summer's evening.
It's easy to forget about Basement Jaxx. With the electronic music scene flooded with young pretenders, they have slipped beneath the radar in recent years. Yet the boys still put on quite a show. With Simon and Felix stationed on decks and instruments at the back of the stage, it's their parade of camply costumed singers who lead the Wireless crowd in a musical trip down memory lane.
Classics like Jump And Shout and Romeo still sound great, good-time party tracks that set the mood and start the audience bouncing. But this set is by no means just a parade of old-hits, with new material suggesting a more contemporary sound to this year's forthcoming album. A surprising remix of Sex On Fire has everyone chanting along, and by the time Where's Your Head At? kicks in and the sun sets brilliantly behind us, the positive energy is surging through the smiling crowd.
There aren't many DJs who can create this kind of atmosphere, but with their mixture of classic hits and tongue-in-cheek pantomime, Basement Jaxx still do it better than most.
