Actor Tom Hanks has hit out at the critics who have slammed his big screen adaptation of Dan Brown's controversial best-seller The Da Vinci Code.
The hugely-anticipated film has received plenty of negative press ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next week.
Several groups have called for the film's release to be blocked and for fans to stage a mass boycott.
But Hanks has today urged people to ignore all the "hooey" and "nonsense" surrounding its build-up and to just enjoy it for what it is.
"We always knew there would be a segment of society that would not want this movie to be shown," he told the Evening Standard.
"But if you are going to take any sort of movie at face value, particularly a huge-budget motion picture like this, you'd be making a very big mistake."
Hanks plays the lead role of Harvard professor Robert Langdon in Ron Howard's film, which has been criticised, most notably, by the Catholic Church, who claim the film is blasphemous and attacks their faith.
