Avatar star Sam Worthington is reportedly in talks to star as Dracula in a new cinematic take on the vampire.
According to Variety, the Australian actor is in negotiations with Universal Pictures to take the lead in Dracula Year Zero, with Alex Proyas directing.
Written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Dracula Year Zero will not focus on Bram Stoker's novel but rather the origins of the Transylvanian bloodsucker.
Variety reports the film will weave "vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler", the Romanian ruler and inspiration for Stoker's villainous vampire.
In another departure from traditional depictions of the character, Dracula Year Zero will portray the vampire as "a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war".
Representatives for Worthington have not yet confirmed the reports, which would signify his first major role since the huge commercial success of Avatar, in which he plays paraplegic ex-marine Jake Sully.
The 33-year-old can next be seen in 'swords-and-sandals' epic Clash of the Titans.
