The sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine will be largely set in Japan, leading man Hugh Jackman has confirmed.
Though it received a mixed critical response, Gavin Hood's look at the back story of the adamantium-clawed mutant grossed over $350 million worldwide and a sequel had been rumoured shortly after its release.
A brief post-credits sequence saw Wolverine in a Japanese bar and while Jackman had confirmed his interest in taking the character to the Far East, no official announcement had yet been made.
"Japan is where we're heading," he told MTV. "And we're starting to work on it now. We're in the first steps of developing that story."
Seed Productions will oversee production of a sequel based on the popular samurai and Yakuza storyline seen in the original Marvel comic book mini-series written by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont in 1982.
"It's my favourite saga of the Wolverine stories," Jackman added. "That's a movie I've longed to make from the beginning, so that's where we're heading."
The original Japanese storyline sees the mutant training in the way of the samurai in a bid to control his primal urges and falling in love with Mariko Yashida, heir to a Yakuza family.
