Oscar favourite Avatar has held the number one spot at the US box office for a sixth consecutive week and looks odds on to become the highest-grossing film of all time.
The James Cameron film took $36 million (£22.34 million) in its eighth weekend on release in the US to retain the top spot as horror effort Legion debuted at number two.
Avatar has now grossed $552.8 million (£343 million) in the US while its international box office is estimated to have reached $1.841 billion (£1.139 billion).
The 20th Century Fox production is now just $2 million (£1.24 million) short of the global box office haul of Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time, with $1.843 billion (£1.143 billion).
"It defies all superlatives," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for Fox, of Avatar's huge commercial success.
Legion was the highest new entry in the US box office top ten, in second, while Dwayne Johnson comedy The Tooth Fairy entered in fourth.
And while medical drama Extraordinary Measures debuted in seventh, animated sequel Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel took its box office haul past $200 million (£123.8 million).
