Romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall has proved memorable for British moviegoers, topping the charts after its opening weekend on release.

The breakup film, written by leading man Jason Segel and directed by Nick Stoller, tells of broken-hearted composer Peter's (Segel) efforts to cope with the end of his relationship with TV star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) only for his holiday in Hawaii to be disrupted by the presence of his ex and her flamboyant new boyfriend Aldous Snow (Russell Brand).

Having taken £2.1 million in its first three days on release, the Judd Apatow production held off the challenge of fellow new releases Persepolis and Nim's Island to take top spot, having been pushed into second place in the US by martial acts movie The Forbidden Kingdom.

Horror remake The Eye, starring Jessica Alba, opened in second place while gambling movie 21 dropped from first to third spot.

Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson have dropped two places to fourth with adventure comedy Fool's Gold while In Bruges fell from third to fifth.

And erotic thriller Deception, starring Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor, fared better in the UK than in its disappointing US release, taking seventh place after its opening weekend.

Despite controversy surrounding its release - after the train drivers' union picketed its London premiere - British comedy Three and Out failed to make an impression on UK filmgoers, opening at number 12 after taking £189,500.

The top ten films at the UK box office are: (last week's position)
