Teen favourite Twilight has dominated the MTV Movie awards with five prizes at the Los Angeles ceremony.

Kristen Stewart was named best actress for her role as Bella Swan, a human girl who falls in love with vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) in the hugely successful adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's novel.

Pattinson and Stewart also took the best kiss award, with the former claiming the male breakthrough performance prize at Sunday evening's ceremony at the Gibson Amphiteatre.

Other winners included High School Musical star Zac Efron, who won the best male prize, Jim Carrey (best comedic performance for Yes Man) and the late Heath Ledger, who won a posthumous best villain trophy for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

The highlight of the ceremony, however, came from British comic Sacha Baron Cohen, who stole the show after making a high-wire entrance as his camp character Bruno.

Baron Cohen, dressed in a barely-there angel outfit, descended from the rafters at a sharp angle and fell face first into Eminem's lap.

The rapper, who had performed at the ceremony, looked uncomfortable and stormed out of the theatre with his entourage, though it has been suggested he may have been part of the stunt.

Night at the Museum star Ben Stiller took the most prestigious prize of the evening, the MTV Generation award, for his succession of hit films, including Meet the Parents, Zoolander and Tropic Thunder.

Stiller received his prize from 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland, who commented: "Ben, I have never had the privilege of working with you but when I see the remarkable consistency you display in your films... I see a consummate professional who commands the respect of his co-actors."
