Shia LaBeouf has said that the traffic accident that led to his arrest and hospitalisation was "eye-opening and terrifying".

The Transformers actor was arrested in July on suspicion of diving under the influence after he was involved in a Los Angeles car crash that caused his truck to flip.

Though police said after the incident that the 22-year-old was "showing obvious signs of intoxication", it has emerged that the young star was unlikely to have been at fault for the crash, as the other car involved did not stop for a red light.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight for the first time since the July 27th accident, which saw him admitted to hospital for surgery on his left hand, LaBeouf said the other vehicle hit him at 70 mph.

"It was one of the biggest things that's happened to me, for sure, in my life," the Indiana Jones co-star added. "I'm grateful to be here."

The incident saw the actor miss the start of filming on Transformers 2 due to the injuries he sustained.

In the days after the crash, Access Hollywood reported that a witness overheard the unidentified male involved in the incident telling LaBeouf to flee the scene.

"The guy Shia hit told him, 'You should get outta here,' and 'I never saw you.'

"He said, 'I never saw you,'" said Brian Perrulli, a passer-by who arrived at the accident scene shortly after the collision.

"Shia said, 'No, man, I gotta stay here and deal with this. It's my problem.'"
