Anticipation in the film world is growing before tonight's British Academy film awards.

The Baftas are always viewed as a fair indicator for the Oscars, which this year take place on February 27th, but all the attention will be on London tonight as Hollywood stars gather in the Royal Opera House auditorium.

Jonathan Ross will be hosting the awards with confirmed attendees including Kate Winslet, Sienna Miller, Penelope Cruz and Daniel Craig.

The latter has already made Bafta history by becoming the first James Bond to win a best actor in a leading role nomination for a portrayal of the shaken-not-stirred spy.

He faces competition from Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed, Richard Griffiths in The History Boys and Forest Whitaker's portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, however.

Bookies have already shut up shop on the best actress award, with Helen Mirren a right royal shoe-in for her stately performance in The Queen.

The movie, which is up for six Oscars later this month, features in ten Bafta categories.

It picked up four gongs at the London Film Critics' circle awards last week and is nominated for the outstanding British film of the year award tonight. Other nominees include Casino Royale, Notes On A Scandal and United 93.
