Silent French movie The Artist was this year's big winner at the London Film Critics' Circle, taking three prizes.

The film, which is shot in black and white, won film of the year, director of the year and best actor for Jean Dujardin.

Meryl Streep, who plays Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, shared the best actress prize with Margaret-actress Anna Paquin.

Director of The Artist Michel Hazanavicius and Dujardin were both at the BFI Southbank event to accept their awards. Hazanavicius said: "Maybe because it's a simple love story. It's universal."

Other gongs on the night went to We Need To Talk About Kevin, which took British film of the year, and Kenneth Branagh, who took the supporting actor of the year award for his role as Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marylin.

The Artist is rapidly becoming an Oscars favourite, having last week been nominated for 12 Baftas.
