Stars from the much-anticipated film Superman Returns are in London tonight for its UK premiere.

Previously unknown US actor Brandon Routh, who plays the caped crusader, will be joined on the red carpet in Leicester Square by the new Louis Lane, Kate Bosworth.

Although the Superman legacy may have been daunting for some, Routh said that he tried to remain undaunted and "to keep the character true".

"I was aware of the great legacy, not only of Superman, but also of Christopher Reeve. He's the one that made me love Superman, watching him perform," he said.

"You have to try to imagine what it's like to be the most powerful person on earth and there's no room for fear in that."

Superman Returns sees all the main characters that fans of the original films have to come to know and love, yet now the situation is different from before.

After searching the universe for five years to discover what happened to the plant Krypton, Superman returns to find that his feisty sidekick Louis Lane is a mother and about to be married. Meanwhile Lex Luther, played by Hollywood legend Kevin Spacey, is attempting to carry out property plans which threaten the lives of billions.

The response so far from critics points towards Superman Returns being one of the hottest films of the year.
