An extended version of triple Oscar winner Avatar could be released in cinemas later this year by 20th Century Fox, according to reports in Hollywood.
The James Cameron film is the highest grossing film of all time but its box office takings could increase even further if claims of a planned re-release prove accurate.
The Hollywood Reporter claims director Cameron and Fox are in discussions about re-releasing the film with additional scenes cut from its original theatrical version.
It is not yet known how much extra footage could be added to the science-fiction epic though IMAX chief executive Richard Gelfond claimed this week that Cameron had around 40 minutes worth of deleted scenes.
However, the maximum length for an IMAX release is 170 minutes, meaning Cameron could add around ten minutes of new footage to his box office smash.
The Titanic director has already confirmed he has several extra scenes that could be added to a theatrical re-release or included on a DVD, including a sequence in which Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) has to prove himself to the Na'vi people and another involving Na'vi warrior Tsu'tey drinking at a tribal festival.
Cameron and Fox are already in discussions regarding potential sequels to Avatar though no deal has yet been agreed.
