New comedy How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, starring Simon Pegg, has topped the UK box office after its first weekend on release.

The Robert Weide movie, based on British journalist Toby Young's account of his time working for Vanity Fair magazine in New York City, took £1.15 million to claim the number one spot.

Action thriller Taken remained in second while last week's number one film fell to third.

Literary adaptation Brideshead Revisited, starring Matthew Goode, Ben Whishaw and Hayley Atwell, was the second highest new entry at number eight.

Mamma Mia! continues to attract UK cinemagoers after 13 weeks on release, having climbed from fifth to fourth, while holocaust drama The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas performed impressively, jumping one place to sixth despite only showing in 175 screens in the UK.
