Angels and Demons has topped the UK box office in its opening weekend, with a £6.1 million debut to knock Star Trek into second place.
The Ron Howard film, based on Dan Brown's bestselling novel, repeated its US success having made a commendable $48 million (£31.6 million) in its opening weekend on release across the Atlantic.
Starring Tom Hanks and Ewan McGregor, Angels and Demons sees symbology professor Robert Langdon (Hanks) looking to solve a mystery behind the kidnapping of five papal candidates in Vatican City.
Last week's number one, JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot, fell to second with £3.5 million in box office receipts while punch-up movie Fighting, starring Channing Tatum, was the only other new entry in the UK top ten.
Animated favourite Coraline fell one place to third while X-Men Origins: Wolverine dropped to fourth in its third week on release.
Synecdoche, New York, Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut, opened at number 11 with an impressive £123,125 despite only opening in 30 cinemas.
