Romola Garai said she was "very flattered and very scared" at her Glorious 39 director Stephen Poliakoff tipping her as the next Kate Winslet on the red carpet last night.
Acclaimed British filmmaker Poliakoff cast the 27-year-old in the lead role of Anne Keys in Glorious 39, a thriller set against the backdrop of pre-war Britain where the appeasement movement desperately tries to avoid conflict with Germany.
Poliakoff told inthenews.co.uk at the UK premiere of Glorious 39 at the London Film Festival: "I'd been following her with great interest and I needed an extraordinary talent and she is an extraordinary talent that holds this film together.
"I think she is our next big star, our next Kate Winslet."
When inthenews.co.uk put this to Garai later at the premiere she admitted having mixed feelings.
"I mean obviously it's an incredible compliment given that she's one of the most beautiful screen actresses of her generation but it's a lot to live up to as well," she said. "I'd just like to put out that tiny fire a little bit."
Earlier, responding to a question about her being a frequently tipped 'rising star', she added: "Well I'm 27, I've been knocking around for a while so every time anyone says you're a rising star I'm like 'hasn't that happened?'"
Garai, who recently starred in a BBC1 adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma - adapted by Poliakoff's wife Sandy Welch - said she "hoped" not to get stuck with period roles forever.
"It is what's very difficult in this country, especially if you're a woman... if you want a good story arc and an interesting characterisation; they tend to be period films.
"I'd love to have more variety in what I do but I also feel very lucky with the parts I've had so I certainly have no desire to start complaining about it."
