Actress Robin Wright Penn has filed for a divorce from her Oscar-winning husband Sean Penn for a third time, reports suggest.

The couple, married in 1996, have begun divorce proceedings twice before, once in December 2007 and then again in April this year.

On both occasions, however, they withdrew the application shortly afterwards.

People magazine claims the couple have now started proceedings once more, and have cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split.

The pair have two children together, Dylan Francis, 18, and Hopper Jack, 16, with reports suggesting they have agreed to shared custody.

Penn picked up the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of gay rights campaigner Harvey Milk earlier this year.
