A new cinematic take on the legend of Robin Hood has topped the UK box office, though its initial takings were not as impressive as blockbuster smash Iron Man 2.
The Ridley Scott film took £5.7 million in its first weekend on release in the UK to knock Iron Man 2 into second place, having failed to do the same in the US.
Starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Mark Strong, Robin Hood takes a different approach to the myth of the bowman and portrays him as a former royal archer who becomes a standard bearer for civilian rights in the late 12th century.
While Robin Hood - which opened the Cannes film festival last week - has claimed the top spot at the UK box office, it failed to match Iron Man 2's opening haul of £7.6 million.
The superhero sequel fell to second, with horror remake A Nightmare on Elm Street falling to third and Jennifer Lopez romcom The Back-Up Plan falling out of the top five to chart in seventh.
The top ten films at the UK box office are: (last week's position)
1 Robin Hood - £5.7 million (-)
2 Iron Man 2 - £1.6 million (1)
3 A Nightmare on Elm Street - £649,323 (3)
4 Hot Tub Time Machine - £573,122 (4)
5 Furry Vengeance - £548,440 (2)
6 Four Lions - £496,649 (6)
7 The Back-Up Plan - £478,917 (5)
8 How to Train Your Dragon - £254,638 (7)
9 The Last Song - £181,489 (8)
10 Date Night - £127,785 (9)
