Ricky Gervais toned down his presenting at last night's (January 15th) Golden Globe Awards.

The British comedian was criticised for his sharp-tongued presenting style last year, in which he seemingly upset a number of Hollywood A-listers.

He opened the ceremony by telling the star-studded audience that the Globes were "just like the Oscars… without all that esteem," before embarking on a waspish monologue.

The 50-year-old said that the event was to the Academy Awards "what [reality TV star] Kim Kardashian is to [Duchess of Cambridge] Kate Middleton - a bit louder, a bit trashier [and] a bit drunker".

However, although he was briefly silenced for swearing, he pokes at the great and good of the film industry were not as cutting as they had been 12 months ago.

Johnny Depp, Dame Helen Mirren and Colin Firth were among the few stars who received a gentle ribbing.

The big winner on the night was silent French film The Artist, which took home three prizes.
