Comedy great Ivan Reitman has confirmed hopes for a third Ghostbusters film are close to being realised.

The first film telling of the exploits of four New York City parapsychologists was released in 1984, with a sequel following five years later after the success of a spin-off action series.

Star and co-writer Dan Aykroyd worked on concepts for a third instalment through the 90s, but script problems and the unwillingness of Bill Murray to make a new Ghostbusters film hampered the project.

But according to Reitman, who directed the first two films, the likelihood of a third Ghostbusters movie has never been higher.

"I produced and directed the first two, so I'd feel very weird to give it up to someone else for a third one," he admitted at a press conference at the London Film Festival.

"I think the real issue is 'Can we get a script that will honour particularly the first movie?'

"It somehow has held on now for over 25 years and people respond to it in a remarkable way."

Reitman pointed to the success of Ghostbusters: The Video Game this year as a reminder to the cast and crew of the original film of the franchise's resonance with the viewing public.

"Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and I have been focusing on it," he added "and I've been meeting regularly with the writers to try to get a draft that everyone can sign off on.

"Since the time that's passed since the last film, this is probably the best shot at it we've ever had."
