Rachel McAdams is the latest star to join the cast of Guy Ritchie's upcoming Sherlock Holmes film, it has been confirmed.
The Mean Girls actress is set to play Irene Adler, a love interest of the enigmatic detective, (Robert Downey Jr), as Ritchie's drama rapidly takes shape.
Downey Jr was confirmed as Holmes in July and last week saw the revelation that Jude Law was finalising talks to play the sleuth's sidekick Dr Watson.
Mark Strong, who played mob enforcer Archie in Ritchie's most recent film RocknRolla, is signed up to play Holmes' nemesis Blackwood, according to Variety.
McAdams' character only appeared in one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels, 1891's A Scandal in Bohemia, but is likely to reprise the role should Warner Bros produce a sequel.
Snatch director Ritchie was contracted by Warner Bros Studios in June to helm a film based on an as-yet-unpublished graphic novel take on Conan Doyle's most famous creation.
Former Warner Bros creative executive Lionel Wigram penned the comic and will also produce the film alongside Dan Lin, Joel Silver and Downey Jr's wife Susan Downey.
Though the plot of Wigram's approach to the 19th century detective remains a secret, it is believed it reimagines Holmes as a more adventurous character, who exploits his pugilistic talents and swordsmanship.
