Twilight star Robert Pattinson and Oscar winner Sean Penn are in talks to join the cast of Depression-era drama Water for Elephants.
Based on Sara Gruen's bestselling historical novel, Water for Elephants tells of a 90-year-old man reminiscing about dropping out of his veterinary course at Cornell University after his parents are killed to take work as a vet for a travelling circus.
According to Variety, Pattinson would play the young animal lover with Reese Witherspoon already attached to star as the beautiful equestrian star married to the circus' enigmatic animal trainer (likely to be played by Penn).
I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence is to helm the Fox 2000 production, with Richard LaGravenese scripting.
Pattinson, who has long been rumoured to be dating his Twilight Saga co-star Kristen Stewart, has become one of the hottest properties in Hollywood since his breakthrough as high school vampire Edward Cullen.
The 23-year-old English actor, however, has made creditable career choices since finding fame, recently completing work on romantic drama Remember Me and signing up last year to star in an adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's novel Bel Ami.
