Horror phenomenon Paranormal Activity has passed the $100 million (£59.9 million) barrier at the US box office, according to distributor Paramount Pictures.
The low-budget film, shot for less than $15,000 (£8,994), is now one of the most profitable films of all time, with word-of-month recommendations leading to audiences demanding it be screened in their hometown.
Starring newcomers Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston, Paranormal Activity tells of a young couple who set up a video camera in their bedroom after growing concern that their house is being haunted.
The Oren Peli film opened on just 12 screens in the US, before expanding nationwide when fans took advantage of online marketing to secure its release in their local cinemas.
The film is not released in the UK until November 25th, but you can read the inthenews.co.uk review here.
Commenting on the film's success, Paramount chief executive officer Brad Grey said: "What is truly amazing about Paranormal Activity is the depth of commitment from fans who demanded to see it. Adam Goodman, our head of production, believed in the film and championed it from the very first screening.
"This box office milestone is also a testament to Oren Peli's considerable talents as a filmmaker. All of us at Paramount are proud to have been involved with his revolutionary project."
