The Oscars ceremony next year will be even longer than usual following the announcement that the best picture shortlist is to be expanded for five to ten films.
The Academy said the decision had been made to recognise a wider range and "more populist" films.
Described as a "return to the past", the expanded list is the first time ten films have been up for the best film Oscar since 1943.
Sid Ganis, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said films such as the huge blockbuster The Dark Knight last year had led to a re-evaluation of the shortlist.
"We nominated five, but there were many other great films last year," he said.
Mr Ganis said the Academy recognised the criticism comedy films were never nominated for Oscars and said there was chance that could change in 2010.
