Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom is to top the bill in forthcoming drama The Good Doctor, it has been announced.
The British actor, who has concentrated on independent films since completing work on the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, will take the title role in the Lance Daly-directed The Good Doctor, according to Variety.
Also starring Michael Pena, Oscar nominee Taraji P Henson and Juno actor JK Simmons, The Good Doctors tells of a frustrated physician aiming to impress his peers and bosses.
He finds a chance to improve his lot after tampering with the treatment of an 18-year-old girl suffering from a kidney complaint, so as to ensure her stay at the hospital.
Pena will play a hospital orderly who blackmails Bloom's character for prescription painkillers after discovering the doctor's relationship with his young patient while Troy Garity will play a contented and successful colleague.
Production is due to begin in Los Angeles this week, with Bloom producing alongside Sharon Miller, Jonathan King and Dan Etheridge.
The Elizabethtown actor recently revealed his desire to reprise his role as quick-eyed elf Legolas in the upcoming films based on JRR Tolkien.
"I shot an email to Pete [Jackson] and I said, 'You know, if you want me to don the blond wig and pointy ears again, I'd be honoured to do it.' He said - funnily enough - 'Well, we'll see'. They're very, very hush-hush."
Bloom added the decision rests with Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro, who is helming the Hobbit films while Lord of the Rings director Jackson produces.
"It's Guillermo's movie and I'm a huge fan of that man," Bloom added. "He's obviously going to take his own idea of it, but I'm excited for that movie. I think it's going to be great."
