Edward Norton is set for a doubly testing role in upcoming comedy thriller Leaves of Grass - he is to play identical twins.

The Fight Club star will begin shooting the film shortly after completing work on State of Play, Universal Studios' adaptation of the acclaimed BBC political drama, according to Variety.

Leaves of Grass, directed and written by Tim Blake Nelson, will see Norton playing an Ivy League classics professor and his cannabis-smoking criminal twin.

O Brother Where Art Thou? star Nelson will also star in the film, which he penned specifically with Norton in mind.

He told the trade paper the actor "would have been my first choice for either of these roles," adding "there would have been no second choice" had Norton turned the parts down.

However Norton has explained the strength of Nelson's script was sufficient to attract him to project, which will represent his second recent project with Nelson after the two starred in upcoming comic book actioner The Incredible Hulk.

"The challenge of playing twins for an actor is very special, and I was very flattered that Tim sent Leaves of Grass to me," Norton said. "I liked it so much, and felt so strongly that it was a film Tim understood to his core, that I took it to my partners and suggested we produce it."

Norton and Nelson will produce with Bill Miglione, Norton's partner in Class 5 Films, the production house for The Painted Veil and Down in the Valley.

"This is exactly the kind of personal filmmaking that we set out to support," Norton said of Leaves of Grass.
