Oscar winner Morgan Freeman is being sued by the woman who was his passenger when he crashed his car in Mississippi last year.

The Dark Knight star broke his arm and elbow and sustained minor shoulder damage during the accident while Demaris Meyer, 48, suffered a broken left wrist and right scapula, cuts and bruises and memory loss.

Ms Meyer says the accident has "changed her life" and left he unable to return to her work as an executive assistant.

She is suing for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost earnings, permanent disability and property damage. Though her attorney Gloria Allred refused to confirm the amount of damages sought, it is believed to exceed $75,000 (£52,660)

Ms Meyer was a passenger in Freeman's car while he was in the midst of a divorce from his wife but strenuously denied claims she was the cause of his marriage split.

"I have been labelled as the other woman and have been accused of having caused the breakup of Mr Freeman's marriage. Nothing could be further from the truth," she said.

"I had hoped and prayed that Mr Freeman, or his representatives, would have set the record straight and cleared my name, but they have not done so and that is why I have chosen to come forward to tell the truth about our relationship."

Her case claims Freeman, 71, failed to pay attention while driving to his guest house after a dinner with his friend William Luckett and his wife, causing the car to flip.

"I sustained numerous injuries. I was unconscious following the accident. I could not take care of myself for several months," Ms Meyer added.

"I have not been able to go back to work and still am suffering both physically and emotionally as a result of the accident."

A spokesman for Freeman said the actor's representatives were confident the matter would be resolved.
