Martin Scorsese's animated adventure Hugo is leading the way at this year's Academy Awards, with 11 nominations.
The 3D epic is nominated alongside eight others for best picture, as well as best director and costume design.
French silent movie The Artist, which has been stealing the show at other recent awards ceremonies, is up for ten awards, including best film, director, actor and supporting actress.
Meryl Streep's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady has earned her a 17th Oscar nomination, while both George Clooney and Brad Pitt are up for best actor.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Kodak Theatre on 26th February.
Both Scorsese's film and Michel Havanacius' The Artist are seen as love letters to cinema, celebrating a bygone era of film.
Black and white comedy The Artist recently won three Golden Globes, including best film.
