Mackenzie Crook has responded to protests from train drivers at the premiere of Three and Out, a new comedy about railway suicides.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star said members of the train drivers' union Aslef (the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen) were "quite right" to publicise the distress caused to London Underground staff by on-track deaths.

But the actor called on audiences to judge the film for themselves and stressed the railway suicides aspect of the script was not a dominant theme.

The British film, starring Crook and new Bond girl Gemma Arterton, tells of a train driver on the London Underground who tries to persuade someone to throw themselves under a train so as to secure compensation.

"They are quite right to come down and point that someone falling under a train is distressing," he told reporters at the Monday night premiere in London's Leicester Square.

"But it does not dwell on those issues and it is not a controversial film. It is a comedy and it is a very funny comedy. It is a road movie about friendship and human emotions."

Aslef distributed leaflets at the premiere reading: "We hope you enjoy the movie tonight, but please remember that for train drivers like ourselves, deaths on the railway are never funny."

Three and Out is released in the UK on Friday April 28th.
