Al Pacino is to receive the 35th life achievement award from the American Film Institute (AFI) in recognition of his contribution to the movie industry.
Chair of the AFI trustee board Sir Howard Stringer said the 66-year-old who shot to fame in 1972's seminal The Godfather was "an icon of American film".
The accolade will be presented to Pacino in Los Angeles on June 7th next year.
He is no stranger to praise after being awarded the best actor Oscar for Scent of a Woman in 1992, receiving eight Academy nominations in total.
Sir Howard explained that the AFI was "proud" to give Pacino the film industry's highest accolade.
"He has created some of the great characters in the movies, from Michael Corleone to Tony Montana to Roy Cohn. His career inspires audiences and artists alike, with each new performance a master class for a generation of actors to follow," he said.
Besides the Godfather trilogy, Pacino's other films include Scarface, Donnie Brasco, Carlito's Way and The Recruit.
Previous winners of the AFI life achievement award include Pacino's Godfather II co-star Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Alfred Hitchcock, Meryl Streep and Orson Welles.
