One Man, Two Guvnors, a West End comedy starring James Corden, has won best new play at the Critics' Choice awards.

It is the second win for its writer Richard Bean, who also took the prize in 2006 for Harvest.

The National Theatre took home five prizes from a possible nine, including Bean's play and London Road, which won best musical.

Eddie Redmayne, former recipient of the best newcomer prize, was awarded best Shakespearean performance for his portrayal of Richard II at London's Donmar Warehouse.

Other gongs went to Sheridan Smith, who took the best actress prize for her role in Trevor Nunn's production of Terrence Rattigan's Flare Path, while Benedict Cumberbatch - known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC television series - was named best actor.

One Man, Two Guvnors is to be transferred to Broadway this spring after an extremely successful run in the capital.
