Comic book sequel Iron Man 2 will be released in IMAX theatres this May, Paramount Pictures have announced.
A digital cut of the Jon Favreau film, which sees Robert Downey Jr returning in the lead role, will be released alongside the standard version of the film on May 7th, the studio confirmed in a press release.
Though not shot using IMAX cameras, Iron Man 2 will be remastered for release on the larger screens used for the digital cinema screens.
"The success of the first Iron Man movie catapulted the franchise from the comic books to theatre screens, and we're excited that the IMAX format will offer fans an even more immersive way to experience the sequel," said Tim Connors, chief operating officer of Marvel Studios.
Greg Foster, chairman and president of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, added: "We're thrilled to once again be working with Paramount and our long time friends at Marvel Entertainment as we help to bring their characters to life in IMAX.
"The combination of Marvel's iconic Iron Man story, Jon Favreau's brilliant vision and Paramount Pictures' talented team coupled with IMAX will make for a wild cinematic experience."
Iron Man 2 is the latest in a series of blockbuster movies to receive an IMAX release, with James Cameron's Avatar, Michael Bay's Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen and David Yates' Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince all receiving outings on the large digital screens.
