The Directors' Guild of America (DGA) have named The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow as the best director of the year.
Bigelow lost out to her ex-husband James Cameron in the same category at the Golden Globes but looks a good bet for Oscar glory after receiving the DGA honour.
As well as beating Avatar director Cameron to the top prize at the DGA ceremony, Bigelow also bested Precious helmer Lee Daniels, Up In The Air's Jason Reitman and Inglourious Basterds director Quentin Tarantino.
Though she is the first woman to win the DGA's top prize, Point Break director Bigelow was gracious in victory, saying: "I suppose I like to think of myself as a filmmaker."
She said further recognition for The Hurt Locker, which won the top prize at the Producers' Guild of America (PGA) last week, was "kind of the pinnacle for the already wild ride The Hurt Locker has put me on".
Bigelow's leading man Jeremy Renner called the director "a warrior, my champion and the most fortunate actor's director".
Bigelow will learn whether she has earned an Oscar nomination on Tuesday.
Other winners at the DGA awards including honours for television comedy Modern Family and multi award-winning drama Mad Men.
