Australian actor Hugo Weaving is in talks to play the villain in Marvel Studios' upcoming Captain America film from Jurassic Park III director Joe Johnston.
The Lord of the Rings actor is in talks with the studio to play Red Skull, the long-term arch-enemy of the iconic comic book character.
Portrayed as a high-ranking ally of Adolf Hitler in the Captain America comics, Red Skull's battles with the Star-Spangled Avenger revolved around Nazi terrorist activities.
Though the villain was buried under the rubble of a bombed building during a fight with Captain America, he was placed into suspended animation and, like the Cap, was later revived in the so-called Silver Age of comics in the 1960s.
Weaving's participation has not yet been confirmed, according to Variety, but contract negotiations are at an advanced stage.
Should the former Matrix actor join the project, he would be reunited with director Joe Johnston, having worked with the director on recent horror hit The Wolfman.
Johnson and Marvel Studios are still searching for an actor to play Steve Rogers, the alter-ego of Captain America, with the likes of John Krasinski and Garrett Hedlund linked to the part.
