Gwyneth: Iron Man left me with a broken leg

Wednesday, 30 Apr 2008 14:59
Gwyneth Paltrow broke her knee on set of Iron Man
Gwyneth Paltrow has explained that a move into comic book movies left her with more than a bulging bank balance after breaking her knee on set.

The actress stars as Pepper Potts, personal assistant to billionaire Tony Stark in Iron Man, which hits UK screens nationwide on Friday May 1st, her first role in a blockbuster movie.

But though the film's expected success should see Paltrow as Potts in a number of sequels, she has revealed her role left her unexpectedly battered and bruised.

"I broke my knee - because I'm a moron and I'm always bashing into things by accident," she was quoted by the World Entertainment News Network as saying.

"I've broken my toes 30 times. I don't know what's wrong with me. I bashed my knee, it really hurt."

And the rigours of filming a big budget, special effects-laden movie only served to worsen the injury, the 35-year-old explained.

"I kept exercising and running around in the movie. Then it really started to expand. In one scene I'm running away from Ironmonger - the bad Iron Man - and I said to [director] Jon [Favreau], 'My knee is really hurting, I don't know how many times I can do this.'

"He was rolling his eyes, saying 'you're fine'. But I went to the doctor and I had a fracture so bad they had to do surgery the next day. They put cement in there! So I felt very smug and he apologised."

She added: "It still doesn't feel right. I had a nerve problem. My legs don't feel the same. Sometimes it happens with surgery. If I get a wax, one leg hurts more than the other."

Special previews for Iron Man begin on Thursday May 1st.End of story
