British filmmakers are to be urged to make films more accessible in a report due to be published next week.

Prime minister David Cameron, ahead of a visit to Pinewood Studios today (January 11th), has said that the film industry should support "commercially successful pictures".

He did, however, acknowledge that the British film industry had made a £4 billion contribution to the economy in the UK, as well as "an incalculable contribution" to the nation's culture.

His comments come before the arrival of a government-commissioned review into the UK's film policy on Monday.

In his report, Lord Smith is expected to make recommendations for the British film industry to concentrate on movies that will be commercially successful.

The principal objectives of the review were to identify obstacles to greater success in the British film industry, to determine how to spend increased Lottery funding and bolstering audience demand for film, including independent British film.

Oscar-winning British independent film The King's Speech was the highest grossing movie of 2011.
