Director Jon Favreau could reunite with his Iron Man colleague Robert Downey Jr on the upcoming adventure Cowboys and Aliens.
Downey Jr signed on for the film in June last year, with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer set to produce the film alongside Steven Spielberg for Dreamworks and Universal.
Based on a graphic novel by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, Cowboys and Aliens tells of an Old West battle between Apache Indians and western settlers, including former sharpshooter Zeke Jackson (Downey Jr), which is interrupted by the crash landing of an alien spaceship near Silver City, Arizona.
Having just completed production on Iron Man 2, due for release in May 2010, Favreau is said to be considering extending his successful partnership with Downey Jr for another comic book adaptation.
Variety and the Hollywood Reporter state the Swingers actor is likely to sign on to direct Cowboys and Aliens, with production possibly starting next year.
As well as Grazer, Howard and Steven Spielberg, Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will serve in a production capacity on the sci-fi Western and are rewriting the script with Lost executive producer Damon Lindeloff.
Having celebrated a career resurrection with the $500 million (£310 million) success of Iron Man and completed work on the sequel, Downey Jr can next be seen in Joe Wright's drama The Soloist and Guy Ritchie's take on Sherlock Holmes.
