Filmmaker Atom Egoyan has paid tribute to actor Liam Neeson's dedication to his work after the tragic death of his wife.

The Schindler's List star was working on sexual drama Chloe when his wife Natasha Richardson was hurt in a skiing accident, suffering fatal head injuries in March 2009.

Neeson left the set after Richardson's passing but later completed work on the film, premiering at the London Film Festival this week.

"I think what was remarkable was that he did come back and was so professional and so dedicated to the film," said Egoyan of Neeson's return.

"It was astonishing, and yet that old adage is absolutely true - the show does go on.

"And I think in some ways it was the best thing he could have done, to be back with people who supported him in a working environment. We were so blessed by his determination to finish the film."

Chloe sees Julianne Moore as a suspicious wife who hires a beautiful escort (Amanda Seyfried) to seduce her husband (Neeson).

Based on the French film Nathalie, Chloe is produced by Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, who told journalists that Neeson's loss affected the cast and crew of the film "as human beings".

"We become a family on a film," he told a Mayfair press conference.

"He's an extraordinarily talented but very, very fine man and to see tragedy strike so close and so quickly.

"Everything seems ordinary and going along. Life is going on and suddenly something happens like this. It really does force you to think about your own life and how fragile everything is."

Neeson can next be seen in horror After Life and fantasy remake Clash of the Titans.
